How to grow Hyacinth Bean (Lablab)

Updated October 2026

Hyacinth bean, or lablab, is a fast, heat-loving twining vine with purple stems, sprays of purple or white flowers and glossy purple pods. It is grown in the US mostly as an ornamental screen, but young pods are eaten cooked in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Mature dried beans are toxic unless thoroughly boiled.

📖 Our full guide: How to Grow Hyacinth Bean (Lablab)

Full sun
Soil
Light, moist, well drained

About 12 inches (30 cm) along a trellis
Support
A sturdy trellis, fence or arbor
Frost
Frost tender; grown as a summer annual

Where to plant

Grow hyacinth bean in full sun in light, moist, well-drained soil, against a sturdy trellis, fence or arbor that can carry a heavy vine. It thrives in hot, humid summers and flowers from late summer, so it is a good choice for the South, though it grows as a summer annual almost everywhere.

As a legume it adds nitrogen to the soil, and it has been grown in the US for forage and as a soil-improving crop.

  • Florida, the Gulf South, Texas and Hawaii: sow in spring after frost; it handles heat and humidity well. The UF/IFAS assessment of non-native plants rates lablab as low invasion risk and not a problem species in Florida.
  • Most other regions: sow after the last frost once the soil is warm, as a summer annual vine.
  • Short-season areas such as the northern tier and Alaska: start seed indoors a few weeks early, or expect flowers but few mature pods before frost.

Choosing a variety

NC State Extension lists 'Alba', a vigorous white-flowered type good in summer heat, 'Giganteus', with large tropical leaves and purple flowers, and 'Rudy Ruby', with dark burgundy foliage.

How to plant

  1. Put up a strong support before sowing.
  2. Sow seed outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
  3. Thin to about 12 inches apart and guide the young vines onto the support.
  4. Pinch the growing tips once if you want a bushier vine.

Watering and feeding

Water regularly while plants establish. Once growing strongly, hyacinth bean copes with dry spells, but steady moisture keeps it flowering. Little fertilizer is needed, as it fixes its own nitrogen.

Harvesting

Pick young, immature pods to cook as a vegetable; do not eat them raw.

Mature dried seeds are toxic in large quantities. NC State notes they are edible only if thoroughly boiled, changing the water several times. Leave mature pods on the vine for ornament or seed, and keep them away from children and pets.

Using it

The flowers are popular for cutting, and the purple pods make a striking display in late summer and fall.

Common questions

Is hyacinth bean edible?

Young pods are eaten cooked in many countries. Mature dried beans are toxic in large quantities and are only safe after thorough boiling with several changes of water. Grow it mainly as an ornamental if you are unsure.

Is hyacinth bean invasive?

In Florida, the UF/IFAS assessment of non-native plants rates lablab as low invasion risk and not a problem species. It is a frost-tender annual in most of the US.

When should I plant hyacinth bean?

Sow after the last frost once the soil is warm. It grows fast in summer heat and flowers from late summer into fall.

Does hyacinth bean need a trellis?

Yes. It is a heavy twining vine and needs a sturdy trellis, fence or arbor.

Can I save hyacinth bean seed?

Yes. Let pods dry on the vine, shell the seeds and store them dry. Keep them away from children and pets, as raw seeds are toxic.
