What is a USDA hardiness zone?
A USDA hardiness zone is based on the average annual lowest winter temperature at a location, divided into 10 degree Fahrenheit zones and 5 degree half zones. It predicts which perennials survive the winter.
Did the zones change?
Yes. The USDA released an updated Plant Hardiness Zone Map in November 2023, the first since 2012. It is about 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer overall and about half the country shifted up a half zone.
